Effect on Forced Swimming Model
Six-week old male mice were fed with Oligonol mixed in CE-2 powder diet at 50mg/kg B.W. ad libitum for 2 weeks. Fatigue was loaded with forced swimming (10 minutes) for 4 consecutive days from day 11 after commencement of Oligonol supplementation, and fatigue degree was assessed using the fatigue evaluation methods including open field and wheel method at day 13. On the final day (day 14), blood was collected to measure each parameter after forced swimming.
Wheel measurement: Number of rotations until the mouse falls from the wheel due to fatigue
Open Field: Number where the mouse crosses marked lines in a certain period of time
TEAC: Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity is a measurement of antioxidant power in serum
LPO: Lipid peroxide measures the oxidation in blood
In the open field and the wheel tests, the Oligonol group showed less fatigue than the control group. Also the TEAC and LPO results showed that Oligonol helped to eliminate the excess oxidative stress generated during forced swimming.
Fatigue Recovery in Athletes
The studies for anti-fatigue effect of Oligonol are directed in Teikyo Heisei University, Kyorin University, Chuo University, Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University, Waseda University, Sapporo Medical University and Seoul National University.
Test over view: A single-blind placebo-controlled crossover study in 47 amateur athletes (25 male, 22 female) between 18 and 22 years old from Chuo University (Tokyo, Japan) was performed to evaluate the effect of Oligonol in helping athletes to recover from exercise fatigue. The subjects included male and female athletes of track (short and long distance) and field. They were randomly divided in two groups (A and B). Athletes took 2 capsules of 100 mg a day (one in the morning and another in the evening). During the first 26-day period Group A received placebo capsules. This first period was followed by a 9-day washout period. Then, Oligonol capsules were administered in a second 26-day period. Group B received the placebo and Oligonol capsules in reverse order.
Result: Parameters were evaluated with questionnaire, RPE score (Rating of Perceived Exertion: subjective perception of physical effort) at the beginning of the study, the last day of the first 26-day period and the last day of the second 26-day period.
Conclusion: Comparing the group that took Oligonol and the group that took placebo, it was possible to observe an improvement of the feeling of fatigue and fatigue recovery in the Oligonol group. In contrast, this condition significantly deteriorated when Oligonol administration was discontinued.
The level of enhancement of exercise performance or lessening for improvement of fatigue has become apparent by method of RPE measure and VAS. These studies are referred to guideline of the Society of Fatigue Science.
Results of the studies have been presented at symposiums and scientific journals around the world.
A doping test of more than 170 substances banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) including exhilarants, drug-related compounds, diuretics, and anabolic agents was performed by a specialized laboratory in the United States. The result verified that Oligonol does not contain any banned substance, so athletes can take Oligonol without concerns.
